Where alpha-cellulose goes
From fibre to tablet to film, alpha content decides what the cellulose can become.
Viscose, modal and lyocell producers use dissolving-grade cellulose; chemical manufacturers convert it into ethers and esters — carboxymethyl cellulose, HPMC, cellulose acetate; pharmaceutical and food producers turn it into microcrystalline cellulose (E460); and nitrocellulose plants need the highest-purity grades of all.
